To Hell With This %$!@?# Virus!

COVID-19 is causing major disruptions to all our lives but there are a couple of good things to come out of the situation. President Trump has announced new guidance that identifies the firearms and ammunition industry as critical infrastructure: “Workers supporting the operation of firearm or ammunition product manufacturers, retailers, importers, distributors, and shooting ranges.” The other good thing is that spam emails have dried up to a tiny trickle.

Our ranges are open but Skeet and Trap shooting will be held at the discretion of the person working that day, so it’s best to call ahead if you are planning to shoot. On the ranges and in the clubhouse please practice social distancing.

News Around The Club

Our April meeting has been abandoned as has the monthly Safety Course and Range Orientation Class. Let’s hope things get back on track for May.

Pistol News
We held a “Pot o’ Gold”, Irish themed pistol shoot on Sunday, March 15th. The shoot was well attended due to the Scituate St. Paddy’s Parade being cancelled — lucky for us, unfortunate for Scituate.

Eighteen shooters turned up eager to blast away at reactive and paper targets. First up were five clay birds followed by five balloons that had a nasty habit of moving around in the wind. Next up were five green eggs which proved to be a challenge for all shooters — next time we’ll use ostrich eggs positioned a little closer to the the firing line.

The last target consisted of two paper targets; a four-leafed shamrock where the shooters had to put one round in each leaf. This qualified them to shoot one shot at the pot of gold on the next target, but they had to hit the gold to score five bonus points.

Winning the shoot was Trish Thompson, wife of Drew Thompson, with a score of nineteen.

Our Pistol Chairman, Paul Figueiredo, anticipates holding monthly plate shoots once things get back to normal.

Skeet & Trap
For the Skeet and Trap shooters amongst the membership, here’s a handy guide to the art of breaking clays featuring Jed, Granny, Jethro, and Ellie Mae Clampett shooting skeet. Thanks to Dave Laucirica for passing this along.

“We are witnessing what amounts to an epiphany for many Americans during this crisis, as they remember what the Second Amendment is about.”

Definitions of Irony
Irony #1 — The people who say “You don’t need that much ammo” are the people who are buying 500 rolls of toilet paper.

Irony #2 — Costco will not accept returns from those who bought multiple years worth of toilet paper when they discovered that COVID-19 did not cause gastric distress.

Firearms Accidents — Record Low Level

NSSF Gratified to See Firearm Accidents Reaching Record Low Level
NEWTOWN, Conn.—The National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®) is pleased to report that unintentional firearm fatalities reached their lowest level ever, according to the latest data from the National Safety Council’s just-released Injury Facts Report 2018.

NSSF, as the trade association for the firearm industry and leading proponent of safe gun handling and storage, applauded the report, which shows fatal firearm accidents at their lowest level since record keeping began in 1903. The firearm industry has for the last two decades provided more than 100 million firearm locking devices with new firearms sold and through its award-winning Project ChildSafe® program—the largest and most comprehensive firearm safety program in the country. The industry’s educational materials are widely distributed to gun owners by firearm manufacturers, retailers, instructors and others nationwide.

“As an industry that prioritizes firearm safety, it is extremely good news to see this record decline in gun-related accidents,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF’s President and CEO. “It’s gratifying to know that our industry’s gun safety efforts, including our long-running Project ChildSafe firearm safety education program, are contributing to helping save lives.”

With approximately 100 million gun owners in the country, the data demonstrates that firearms can be safely owned and used and accidents prevented as long as secure storage guidelines are followed. “Securely storing firearms when not in use is the No. 1 way to help prevent accidents, thefts and misuse,” said Bartozzi.
